Wuhu Deploys Humanoid Robot Traffic Officer in Smart City Pilot

Wuhu has become one of the first cities in China to deploy humanoid robots in traffic management roles, launching a pilot program that places AI-powered “robot traffic officers” at key intersections throughout the downtown area.

The humanoid robots, standing approximately 1.8 meters tall, are equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, and natural language processing capabilities that allow them to interact with pedestrians and motorists in real-time. They can provide directions, report traffic violations, and assist elderly citizens in crossing busy streets.

“This is a significant step toward our vision of a smart, responsive city,” said the director of Wuhu’s Smart City Initiative. “These robots augment our human traffic officers and provide consistent, 24/7 coverage in high-traffic areas.”

The robots are powered by renewable energy sources and feature weather-resistant designs suitable for Wuhu’s varied climate conditions. Each unit is connected to the city’s central traffic management system, allowing for coordinated responses to accidents, congestion, and special events.

Initial public reaction has been positive, with many residents expressing fascination with the technology. The pilot program will run for six months, after which the city will evaluate expanding the robot traffic officer program to additional locations.
